  • Freshwater Ecosystems versus Hydropower Development: Environmental Assessments and Conservation Measures in the Transboundary Amur River Basin
    Author:
Eugene A. Simonov, Oxana I. Nikitina and Eugene G. Egidarev, 2019
Hydropower development causes a multitude of negative effects on freshwater ecosystems, and to prevent and minimize possible damage, environmental impact assessments must be conducted and optimal management scenarios designed.
The results of this work show how the initial avoidance and mitigation of hydropower impacts at early planning stages are more productive than the application of any measures during and after dam construction, that the assessment of hydropower impacts must be performed at a basin level rather than be limited to a project implementation site, and that the full spectrum of possible development scenarios should be considered. In addition, this project demonstrates that stakeholder analysis and robust public engagement are as crucial for the success of environmental assessments as scientific research is for the protection of river basins.

  • Environmental Flow Releases for Wetland Biodiversity Conservation in the Amur River Basin
    Author:
Oxana I. Nikitina, Valentina G. Dubinina, Mikhail V. Bolgov, Mikhail P. Parilov and Tatyana A. Parilova, 2020
Flow regulation by large dams has transformed the freshwater and floodplain ecosystems of the Middle Amur River basin in Northeast Asia, and negatively impacted the biodiversity and fisheries. This study aimed to develop environmental flow recommendations for the Zeya and Bureya rivers based on past flow rate records. The results emphasize the importance of considering environmental flow during the early stages of dam planning and the need to enhance the role of environmental flow in water management planning.

    Author:
    WWF Russia, 2019
The spawning forest zones is a special category of forests created in 1958 to preserve the coastal zones of water bodies, where the most valuable species of fish, i.e. salmon, sturgeon, and others spawn. These forests protect spawning rivers from adverse effects of industrial logging: soil ablation into the water, excessive spring floods and reduction of the water in summer, and silting spawning grounds.

    Author:
    WWF Russia
Conservation of floodplains is enormously important for protecting the river system and its biological diversity.Wetlands of the Amur are characterized by large numbers of rare species, such as the Oriental stork,
Red-crowned and White-naped cranes, whitetailed eagle, Mandarin duck and many others. For many species these are the northernmost nesting sites, and for millions of waterfowl the Amur floodplain is the main stopover for feeding during their annual migration.
